A pair of San Diego residents who died in the September 11-12 terrorist attack on the United States Consulate in Benghazi, Libya have been named U-T San Diego‘s 2012 “Persons of the Year.”

Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, both former Navy SEALs who became CIA contractors, were killed after hours of fighting and are credited with helping evacuate and save as many as 30 people. From the front-page New Year’s Day editorial:
Doherty's family has no time for those who see the attack in a political context and who demand that heads roll in the Obama administration. His sister, Kate Quigley, of Marblehead, Mass., urges those who care about her brother to visit a website created in his honor, glendohertyfoundation.org. This reflects the family's wish that the focus be on the victims.
